I didn’t know it was possible to love the Broom Cupboard quilt more than I already do, but these scrappy will o’ the wisp blocks have stolen my heart.
Cutting the units for these blocks is a little more complicated than the brooms. Hopefully my notes below serve you well if you want to make similar, scrappy blocks!
Background Units
I started by cutting several 6" x WOF strips of background fabric. Cutting the units from these strips is much more manageable than trying to cut from yardage. I chose 6" just because I have a 6" x 24" ruler.
I randomly cut three or four background units from one fabric, then moved on to the next fabric. I also have a collection of 2½" x 2½" scraps that I cut down to size for the D7 units.
Accent Units
I spent a good amount of time sorting through my scraps to find three groups of fabric, each with very similar colors. I have lots of Ruby Star Society scraps, which is helpful because they’re very consistent with the colors they use.
I settled on pink, reddish-orange, and purple. Similar to the background units, I randomly cut one or two units from each fabric. This seemed like the best way to introduce lots of scrappiness.
Fabric Organization
I used a fabric pen to write the unit label on the wrong side of each piece, and paper plates to keep all the fabrics organized by color.
Assembly
After cutting the scrappy units, you can just follow the pattern to assembly the blocks!
